Combination blessing and pet adoption opportunity with local animal rescues: puppies; dogs; kittens; cats. Again this year with song and prayer, we celebrate our pets and reaffirm our role as caretakers of God's creatures and creation. This service is a time of thanksgiving for unconditional love between animals and humans. All pets and their caretakers of whatever denomination are welcome. Pet adoptions continues until 5pm. Location rain or shine is St. Edmund's Grotto--parking lot next to the church on Avenue T between East 19th Street and Ocean Avenue. Enter by way of the driveway on Avenue T. All well behaved animals are invited; all pets must be accompanied by their owners and human friends. Please have control of your pets!!! Children may bring their stuffed animals if they don't have a live pet. If an animal is unable to attend, photos or an article attached to the pet may be brought to be blessed. Prayers also will be said for deceased pets. Each pet and caretaker will receive a memento of the blessing to bring home. Each person will receive a ticket for a free raffle. A beautiful statue of St. Francis, patron and protector of animals, will be on display for all to see along with 1st and 2nd class relics of St. Francis. Light refreshments will be served for all pets and their caretakers. We look forward to seeing you on Oct. 3. Come have your pet blessed and see the pets available for adoption.

This is a special year for St. Francis Day as the entire length of the cathedral is available again at last, ready to accommodate all animals and their caretakers, friends, and families. Thanks to Dawn Animal Sanctuary, visitors can expect to see a great variety of animals process up the nave, including a yak, a tortoise, baby swans, and a macaw. Animals can be blessed on the Close, where the Cathedral’s annual St. Francis Day Fair begins at 1pm. The Fair’s themes-–celebration of the natural world, compassion, and stewardship–-align with the vision and work of this important saint. NB: Friends and members of the public please be advised that there are no more advance tickets for the 11am service.
